New Student Orientation


Welcome Parents and Family Members!

We are excited that you are joining the John Jay family in the coming months. As the support network for your students, you play an important role in helping us develop a strong and reassuring environment that will ensure your students' success. We invite you to join your student during New Student Orientation. Our staff and faculty can assist you and your family in making a smooth transition into the John Jay College community. While your student attends their Orientation, our team holds Family Orientation on the same date and time. Your experiences will be separate but both you and your student will learn everything John Jay has to offer!

To stay informed about next steps after your students' acceptance to the college, students should periodically check their e-mail for communications from the college. Students will be sent an e-mail invitation for Orientation where they will be able to RSVP to an Orientation date that works with their schedule. Due to space restrictions we cannot accept walk-ins. When they RSVP to Orientation, they will be able to RSVP you and other family members who would like to attend our Family Orientation program. Congratulations! Now that you have been admitted, there are a few steps that you need to take in order to confirm your enrollment and begin the process of becoming a John Jay College student.

Once you have sent in your seat deposit (if applicable), submitted an immunization form, and have taken placement tests, you will be invited to Freshmen Orientation & Advisement/Registration via an e-mail invitation. Freshman Orientation runs throughout June and July. Continue to check your e-mail for your personalized invitation.

Submit Your Seat Deposit and Enrollment Form

Send a personal check or money order, along with the Seat Deposit and Enrollment Form, to: Office of Admissions, John Jay College, 524 West 59th Street, Room L.64, New York, NY 10019. Checks are payable to “John Jay College.” Do not mail cash. Or you may visit the Office of Admissions at 524 West 59th Street, Room L.64 and pay in person. This office only accepts personal checks or money orders.

Sign Language Interpreting Services

Sign Language (SL) interpreters are available to translate lectures and discussions using (SL). Sign Language interpreters meet the specific standards developed by the National Registry for the Deaf.

  • Interpreting lectures, questions, answers, and conversation using gestures and
  • facial expressions to indicate inflection and tone emphasis

Math Placement Test Information

You will receive a letter from the CUNY Testing Office notifying you of the date and time of the CUNY Assessment Test in Mathematics. The purpose of this test is to determine your placement into a math course. Prepare for the test by reviewing sample questions. It is important to take this test as soon as possible in order to begin the advisement and registration process. Contact the Testing and Evaluation Office at 212-237-8108 or email with “Spring 2017 Freshman” in the subject line, if you need to reschedule. If you live outside of the New York City area, please contact the office to reschedule a testing time that is convenient for you and your family.

Immunization Requirements

Before you register for classes, you will need to submit the immunization form to the Student Health Center, 524 West 59th Street, Room L.67. The Health Office will review the documents and contact you directly if any additional information is required.

Financial Aid

If you have not yet applied for financial aid, please read the financial aid section below. Please note that you will need to complete your FAFSA application (Select 2016-2017 FAFSA) to determine financial aid eligibility. John Jay College FAFSA school code is 002693. Our New York State TAP code is 1414.

After you have completed the FAFSA Application, check your personal email for your Student Aid Report (SAR). Download the Student Aid Report (SAR) and read it carefully. If the Student Aid Report (SAR) states that you need to verify information that you entered on the FAFSA, you will need to submit the required documentation in addition to your income documentation. Below is a list of acceptable income documentation that you will need to submit along with the 2016 – 2017 Verification Form. Submit documentation in person to Jay Express Services Center.

1) Tax filers (student and/or parent) who did not use IRS Data Retrieval at initial FAFSA filing or through the FOTW correction process must provide an IRS transcript for 2015.

2) Social Security award letter for 2015 (Form 1099).

3) Public Assistance (PA) budget letter dated 2015, listing all family members in the case.

4) Veteran’s benefits award letters for 2015.

5) Pension award notices for 2015.

6) Birth or baptismal certificates for siblings not listed on tax returns or PA budget letter.

NYS Residency Determination

Determination for New York State Residency is based on the information provided on your application. You may qualify for the resident tuition rate if you are a US citizen or permanent resident and you have continuously maintained a residence in New York State for a period of at least twelve (12) consecutive months immediately preceding the first day of classes. Additional information regarding residency status is available on the residency and in-state tuition webpage.


You will receive an invitation to attend a freshman advisement session during the summer. Please note, you will need to submit your Seat Deposit and Immunization Form prior to registration.

Email Account

You may set up your John Jay email address after you have registered for courses. Upon completing the enrollment process, John Jay College will be communicating with you exclusively through your John Jay College student email address. Want to RSVP for Transfer Orientation?

Once you have sent in your seat deposit (if applicable), submitted an immunization form, and have your transfer credits evaluated, you will be invited to Transfer Orientation via e-mail. Please note, you will NOT be advised and registered for classes during orientation.  If you wish to meet with an adacemic advisor regarding your class registration, please reach out to them to schedule an appointment. Once you have been fully accepted into the college, you will receive an e-mail and a letter to your home address formally inviting you to Graduate Student Orientation. This letter and/or e-mail will provide further instruction on how to RSVP for Orientation.
